Expandable Cottage on Trailer

Some customers ask about mounting an expandable cottage on a trailer. This page explains the options and important compliance considerations.

Trailer Options

Base trailers are available as an optional extra for customers who want the cottage mounted on a trailer frame rather than installed on permanent foundations.

Registered trailer packages are also available for customers who need the cottage to be road-registered as a towable unit.

Trailer options are compatible with select cottage models. Contact our team to discuss which configurations support trailer mounting.

Compliance Considerations

A trailer does not automatically exempt a structure from planning or building requirements. Even if a cottage is on a registered trailer, your local council may still require approval for its placement and use.

If the cottage is registered as a vehicle, different rules may apply — but these vary by state. We recommend checking with your local council and road authority before assuming a trailer removes the need for approval.

Expandable cottages on trailers are not represented as Class 1a dwellings.

When a Trailer Makes Sense

A trailer-mounted cottage may make sense if you need to move the cottage frequently, if your council has different rules for movable structures, or if you want the flexibility to tow the cottage between locations.

If the cottage will stay in one place long-term, installing it on permanent foundations is typically simpler and more cost-effective.

Expandable Cottages

Designed as relocatable, expandable structures. Their permitted placement and use depend on the property, local planning controls and intended use. They are not represented as Class 1a dwellings.

BPA Cottage Pathway

Designed and documented to support an application for a building permit. Approval is site-specific and remains subject to planning requirements, building surveyor assessment, engineering, reports and relevant authority approval.
